At NYU’s film school, Roth produced and directed Restaurant Dogs, a spoof of Reservoir Dogs by Quentin Tarantino. The film won Division III in 1995 after being nominated for a Student Academy Award.
Through his internship with Frederick Zollo, Roth got to know David Lynch. Over the years, they maintained communication, and Roth began contributing to Lynch’s new website in the late 1990s. Roth wrote much of it while working as a production assistant on Howard Stern’s 1996 film Private Parts.
Funded by individual investors, Cabin Fever was produced in 2001 on a budget of $1.5 million. Lionsgate bought the film for $3.5 million, which was the largest sale of the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival.
